York Peppermint Patties

My mum loved York Peppermint Patties. I can't remember the first time she got one, it could have been around 2012, it could have been later.

Our usual place to get them was from Martha's Backyard, which used to be on Lunn Ave, Mt Wellington, but eventually moved to the Mt Wellington Shopping Centre.

Trips there would normally be on the weekend.

I've always had a love for American culture, food being a big part of that culture, and candy also playing a big role.

York Peppermint Patties were never one of my favourites, I preferred the Butterfingers, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers, Mounds, etc. But with mum having loved them, there's a place in my heart for them as well.

My memory right now is saying it was while she was eating a York Peppermint Patty she had her first seizure, but I can't be sure. There was definitely chocolate involved. We were watching Zodiac on Netflix, mum was on her couch, she just passed out, woke up, had no idea how much time had elapsed, she thought someone else had eaten the chocolate she had just been eating, her temperature spiked and her speech became just a little bit different. We took her to the hospital to get checked out and she eventually came home. (I wrote about this situation earlier)

It feels weird to remember my mum. Like, I shouldn't have to remember her. There shouldn't be that much disconnect from me and her. But there is, and I just have to.
